Hi, I’m Nina 🙂
I grew up and came of age in Germany, shaped by many narratives of what a “normal” or successful life should look like. Early in my adult life, I began to feel out of step with these assumptions and found myself exploring other ways of living and relating. Since then, my life has been shaped by an ongoing questioning of many social norms around family, relationships, education, work, and success. Alongside this has been a gradual search for ways of living that feel more honest and relational to me.
These questions took shape through extended stays in Central America and East Africa, encounters with people there, and books, films and songs that challenged the narratives I had grown up with. My path since then has been anything but linear, marked by many returns, shifts between places, and lessons learned over time rather than a single decisive break. My family and I are now living on a remote island in Panama, the home of my husband, where we run a small family tourism business (Surf&Chill Bastimentos). Living here has deepened my awareness of how my life is entangled with systems and structures I did not choose, and it has nourished an ongoing curiosity about how to stay human, relational, and responsive within them. This inquiry has also led to the decision to unschool our three sons, opening further fields of exploration and unlearning.
The ways I have learned to attend, notice, and practice presence over the years include different approaches. I have learned through life itself, through intentional reading and inquiry, and through participation in more structured learning spaces. Along the way, I have been supported by a range of practices and frameworks, including The Work of Byron Katie, Internal Family Systems (IFS), the reclamation work developed by Peter Koenig, the GTDF Collective’s pedagogical tools, explorations of neurobiology, meditation and breath work, embodiment, and homeopathy.
Alongside these threads, I have recently found an online home in the Conscious Tribes Community. Since 2024, I have also been working as the editor of their newsletter, a role that brings together my love for writing, inner work, and the exploration of new ways of living and relating.
I value being in community – online as well as in person – to hold space for each other, exchange ideas, and practise openness, honesty, and compassion.
Solitude and silent contemplation are equally important to me, offering space to listen to what is unfolding inside me and to be with what is present.
Sometimes my life seems very simple, and sometimes it seems utterly complicated – and that’s ok.
My favourite place to be is surrounded by the natural and more-than-human world – whether it is on a mountain, in the forest, at a lake, river, waterfall, or the beach.
I find myself continually learning new things and I enjoy sharing my experience with others.
